HLA-B27 positive does not necessarily mean ankylosing spondylitis, it’s just a gene, but it means that people who carry the gene are more likely to get ankylosing spondylitis than those who don’t carry it. Ankylosing spondylitis is a common rheumatic disease that is relatively common in men and has a tendency to run in families. About 10% of people with ankylosing spondylitis do not carry the HLA-B27 gene, so it is assumed that there may be other underlying causes. The main manifestation of ankylosing spondylitis is low back pain, and there can also be manifestations of attachment pointitis such as peripheral joint pain, alternating hip pain or heel pain. The most effective treatments for ankylosing spondylitis are currently biological agents, such as tumor necrosis factor antagonists.
