If the pet dog has not been vaccinated against rabies, be sure to immediately rinse the wound with soapy water for about 15 minutes. If the wound is bleeding, be sure to rinse the blood off or squeeze the tissue so that it facilitates the flow of blood out. Then disinfect the wound with iodophor or alcohol. After treatment, go to a nearby hospital as soon as possible for further examination and, if necessary, rabies vaccination. It is important to note that the rabies vaccine must be given within 24 hours. Even if the wound does not appear to be bleeding, it is best to go to the hospital for an examination and to follow the doctor’s advice to decide whether further rabies vaccination is needed. In addition, after the rabies vaccination, it is important to avoid spicy and stimulating foods, to quit smoking and alcohol, and to avoid catching a cold, strenuous exercise or excessive fatigue.
