Heart cough can be categorized into heart fire and inflammation against the lungs, heart and lung qi and yin deficiency, etc. Different types of cough can be treated with different medications. 1. Heart-fire and inflammation against the lungs: manifested as coughing, shortness of breath, accompanied by heartburn and insomnia, thirst, yellow urine and constipation. It can be treated with the addition and subtraction of Guiding Chi San and Diarrhea White San.
2. Heart qi and yin deficiency: weak cough, sputum is difficult to cough out, accompanied by heart qi deficiency, shortness of breath, hot flashes and night sweating, insomnia, shortness of breath, chest tightness. It can be treated with the combination of Tianwang Xinxindan and Maimendong Tang.
3. Deficiency of heart yang: cough with sputum thin or white, chest tightness, shortness of breath, cold limbs, accompanied by palpitations, shortness of breath and spontaneous sweating, fatigue, pallor or blue lips. Gui Zhi plus Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori Tang can be used to reduce the symptoms.
4. Phlegm and stagnant stagnation syndrome: manifested as cough with excessive phlegm or throat rumbling, accompanied by heart pain, chest tightness, palpitation and dizziness, stifling and stabbing pain in the heart and chest. It can be treated with the addition of Gua Puzu Allium baijiu Tang (瓜蒌薤白白酒汤) combined with Xuefu yiubu Tang (血府逐瘀汤) .
