Signs and Symptoms of Mental Retardation

Symptoms of mental retardation include general and special manifestations, which are abnormalities in cognition, language and personality, while special manifestations are related to the primary disease.
1. General manifestations: children with mental retardation may have abnormalities in cognition, language, personality, movement and daily activity ability, etc., which mainly include slow perception speed, distraction, poor memory, poor speech, low thinking ability, poor calculation ability, unstable emotion, weak will and poor communication ability.
2. Special manifestations: for example, congenital hypothyroidism can be manifested as short limbs, patients with phenylketonuria can have light brown hair, accompanied by the smell of rat urine, and patients with incontinence of pigment can have skin pigmentation defects and so on.
Parents of children with mental retardation should take them to the hospital in time for standardized treatment under the guidance of doctors.
