Stroke Rehabilitation Myths Explained

At present, China has more than 270 million patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and as many as 30 million patients die from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases every year. This winter’s dry and cold climate and hazy weather have increased the frequency of vasoconstriction and spasm, and stroke has entered a high incidence period again. Recently, Deng Xiaorong, director of the Department of Neurology I at Hubei Zhongshan Hospital, explained in detail the prevention and treatment of stroke in response to the high incidence of stroke, and suggested that many patients and families still have misconceptions about stroke. Misconception one: look up information on the Internet and train yourself Deng Xiaorong: give an example. There is an ordinary stroke patient, carried out timely rehabilitation, after the rehabilitation should be discharged, we introduced to him, you have to continue rehabilitation. His damage was not particularly severe. He said, “I’ll go back and practice on my own”. This person was smart enough to look up a lot of training on the Internet. Not enough upper body strength, let me see how to train upper body strength! After checking the Internet, he bought a grip ring and an elastic stick, and then went to the surrounding community to practice strength with the training equipment. This patient came to my clinic three months later and looked like a “basket case”. When told that the first practice grip circle, the second practice elastic stick, the third practice biceps strength, I simply cried and laughed. The training was all wrong! We told him that the upper limbs should try to avoid flexor exercises and minimize strength training; but he had his own understanding, I am not strong enough? I have to practice strength. He said he could also lift twenty pounds, I said your upper limbs in addition to lifting twenty pounds, what else can you do? In the end, his hand became a “useless hand”, which was a great pity. This example shows that rehabilitation training is not that simple, and it is best to do it under the guidance of a professional. Myth 2: Rehabilitation is all about needles and physical therapy Deng Xiaorong: The following is a common misconception: “Rehabilitation is all about needles and physical therapy”. Until now, there are not a few patients who hold this view, and it is very common. In fact, this is a typical misconception. Rehabilitation is very different from our traditional acupuncture and physiotherapy massage. Acupuncture, massage and tui-na have their own indications, and functional recovery after stroke is not an indication, it is an indication for rehabilitation. Many patients just have acupuncture, and many of them end up delaying the best time for rehabilitation because they go for acupuncture. Misconception 3: not see the effect to give up Deng Xiaorong: there is also a more common misconception, many patients trained for a period of time, also adhere to a period of time, found that it has not returned to normal, many patients give up. Such a patient is a pity, we stroke functional impairment, it is characterized by “the disease is like a mountain, the disease is like a silk”, in the emergence of functional impairment, it happens very quickly. However, the recovery of function is often measured in months and years. Therefore, it is very important to adhere to rehabilitation training. Here is an important principle of rehabilitation: early, continuous, and correct. Sustained means that rehabilitation should be done continuously. It is generally accepted that motor function generally takes 6 to 12 months, speech impairment more than a year, and cognitive impairment may be longer. This is not possible without perseverance and patience. For such patients, you must persist, persistence is victory. If you persist, it is possible that your function will be able to come close to your highest level of recovery. Deng Xiaorong emphasized that in stroke rehabilitation, the awareness of rehabilitation is the most important thing. I hope that patients and their families can gradually improve these aspects, so that the patient can really get a maximum recovery of function. Expert tip: Once symptoms are detected, attention should be paid to early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment. Choose the right treatment is the key, do not have the disease to seek medical help, causing serious injury. It is recommended to go to a regular public hospital for standardized treatment so that patients can recover as soon as possible.
