Procedures for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment

Orthodontic treatment is a long course of treatment (as little as half a year, as long as 2~3 years), and each treatment takes a long time, so each patient had better understand the whole process of treatment in order to arrange their time reasonably. Initial consultation (first visit): both parents and patients are required to be present, the doctor will initially check whether the patient needs orthodontic treatment, give advice on the problems and treatment methods, if the patient wants and needs treatment, dental and cranial X-rays will be taken, plaster casts of upper and lower jaws will be taken to understand the problems in detail and to make a perfect treatment plan. The first follow-up visit: the problems and treatment plan (including: whether orthodontic treatment can be performed, which braces to use, whether extractions are needed, which teeth to extract, expected outcome, course of treatment and cost, etc.) will be discussed in detail, preferably in the presence of both parents and the patient (if the child is not convenient for school and the treatment plan is simple, the patient may not come to the hospital). For more complex cases, additional tests should be added, such as temporomandibular joint X-ray or MRI for TMJ problems, dental CT for ambulant teeth, and wrist films for growing children who need orthopedic jaw treatment. Patients and family members should understand the treatment plan and complications of orthodontic treatment in detail and sign the informed consent form for treatment, and take facial and intraoral images. Patients who need extractions can have them at the same time (extractions usually have to be done twice, this is the first time). Second follow-up: second extraction. The third follow-up visit: fitting of the aligners and subsequent follow-up visits every 5 weeks or so, with additional appointments for any damage to the aligners or other special treatment. The last follow-up: the removal of the aligner at the same time the doctor will again take the plaster model to make the retainer, the same day or the next day to wear the retainer, after that no more fixed follow-up appointments, patients with problems can call at any time to schedule a follow-up appointment, no problem is best every six months for a follow-up to understand the wear of the retainer.
