Abstract: Xia Xia, 30, recently developed symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion and runny nose, and the discomfort would be more obvious especially when encountering cold air or contact with dust and other substances, which are typical clinical symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis is mainly related to genetic factors and is usually triggered by exposure to allergens. Xia Xia’s symptoms were gradually relieved after active medical treatment, and his condition was controlled.
Basic information】Male, 30 years old
Disease Type】Allergic rhinitis
Hospital】Shanghai Changhai Hospital
Date of consultation】November 2019
Treatment plan】Topical medication (levocabastine hydrochloride nasal spray, budesonide nasal spray) + oral medication (cetirizine hydrochloride tablets)
[Treatment period] 2 weeks of standardized treatment with medication and regular follow up
Treatment effect】Nasal discomfort symptoms gradually eliminated, to achieve clinical cure effect
I. Initial consultation
When he first met Xia, he reported that he had suffered from allergic rhinitis for many years, with symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion and nasal itching, especially in cold weather or in the season of warm flowers, and in severe cases, he also had a reduced sense of smell. He had been treated by a doctor in the past, and routine blood tests showed high absolute eosinophil and eosinophil percentages, and his symptoms were relieved by anti-allergy medication as prescribed by the doctor, but recurred after stopping the medication. The initial diagnosis was allergic rhinitis, which usually cannot be completely cured, but can only be prevented and treated in a standardized way to control the symptoms and improve the quality of life.
II. Treatment history
The examination of Xia Xia’s nose revealed congestion and edema of the nasal mucosa, as well as the presence of watery secretions in the nasal cavity. Cetirizine hydrochloride tablets were given to Xia Xia to relieve the symptoms of sneezing and runny nose caused by allergy, and topical application of levocabastine hydrochloride nasal spray and budesonide nasal spray was given to relieve the symptoms of nasal congestion. Because of Xia Xia’s recurrent allergic rhinitis, allergen determination was recommended, but Xia Xia refused, so she was only advised to wear a mask for protection when she went out.
III. Treatment effect
After the standardized medication, Xia Xia’s allergic rhinitis improved significantly. After 1 week of medication, Xia Xia’s symptoms of sneezing, nasal congestion and runny nose were relieved, but the symptoms of sneezing and runny nose still occurred occasionally. After 2 weeks of medication all discomfort symptoms have basically disappeared, and with the adjustment of life, the treatment effect is more satisfactory, but we also need to pay attention to daily precautions so as not to lead to the recurrence of the disease.
IV. Notes
We are glad that Xia’s condition is under control, but we still need to advise Xia to pay attention to indoor air hygiene, suggest proper ventilation for air circulation, and also suggest to keep the room clean and hygienic and clean it regularly to avoid the accumulation of dust mites that can trigger allergies; in terms of diet, try to avoid cold foods such as shaved ice and ice cream, etc.; when going out, pay attention to keep warm to avoid cold air stimulation that can trigger the disease. It is also recommended to reduce the number of visits to places with high traffic and parks with more pollen, and to wear masks and take protective measures when going out.
V. Personal insight
Allergic rhinitis is a relatively common disease in daily life, usually related to their own genetic factors, which can lead to sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion and other discomforts, and in severe cases, even itchy eyes, tearing, chest pain, asthma and other symptoms. However, there is no need to be too alarmed about this kind of people, like Xiao Xia in this case, who went to the hospital for standardized treatment in time and paid attention to preventive measures in daily life, which usually can effectively control the discomfort symptoms and thus improve the quality of life.
