Mumps should be treated in a hospital’s maxillofacial surgery or infectious diseases department. Because mumps is caused by the mumps virus, the disease is an infectious disease and requires isolation. Mumps can cause enlargement of the parotid gland and lead to complications such as meningoencephalitis, orchitis, ovaritis, pancreatitis and other complications. Some cases of mumps are pyogenic parotitis caused by bacterial infection, which can cause localized redness, swelling, heat and pain in the parotid gland, and an increased white blood cell count. If the lesion enters the abscess stage, squeezing the parotid gland may cause pus to flow out of the duct, which also requires anti-inflammatory treatment. Another type of parotitis is inflammation of the parotid gland caused by immune disorders.
