Chaihu Shu Liver Pill has the effects of dredging the liver and promoting qi, activating blood circulation and relieving pain (relieving pain by removing blood stasis), and is used for the symptoms of liver qi stagnation (liver qi is not flowing smoothly), which manifests as pain in the ribs and wounds after getting angry, tightness in the chest, fondness for sighing, depression and irritability, belching (hiccups), and distension of the epigastric region (abdomen), and so on.
The drug is composed of Chai Hu (柴胡) to relax the liver and relieve depression (treating depression by unblocking liver qi), Chuan Xiong (川芎) to move qi and relieve pain (relieving pain by regulating the body’s qi), Chen Pi (陈皮) and Hovenia Citrus (枳壳) to regulate qi and stagnation, and Paeonia lactiflora (芍药) and Glycyrrhiza glabra to support the easing of pain and relieving pain (relieving the symptoms of pain of more urgent nature). Contraindicated in pregnant women, adverse reactions include abdominal pain and diarrhea.
