Introduction to the current status of hernia incidence and treatment options

Hernia, commonly known as “small intestine gas”, is formed when an intra-abdominal organ or tissue protrudes from the body surface due to a defect in the abdominal wall. According to incomplete statistics, there are about one million hernia patients in China who suffer from pain. Statistics show that the total prevalence of inguinal hernia is about 3.6‰, with a prevalence of 11.8‰ over the age of 60. The early or mild symptoms of hernia will feel pain, lower abdominal cramps, indigestion and diarrhea; when the condition progresses, it will cause inconvenience in moving and walking; in serious cases, it will become embedded and if not treated in time, it will cause intestinal necrosis and even endanger life. Therefore, patients should consult a doctor as early as possible when they find a hernia, and do not think that a hernia is too small to be treated! The only way to completely treat the disease is surgery. Tension-free repair surgery is currently used to cover the defect with a patch of polymer material, commonly known as a “patch”. This method includes a variety of surgical approaches, each with its own characteristics and advantages. At present, our hospital is in line with the most advanced technology at home and abroad for inguinal hernia repair, and we can choose different surgical methods according to the patient’s own conditions, and we are one of the few hospitals in China that can perform all the procedures. The most advanced method of anterior inguinal hernia repair at home and abroad has the advantages of less surgical trauma, less postoperative pain, faster recovery, and lower recurrence rate. Compared with traditional repair methods, the open ModifiedKugel technique and lumpectomy repair techniques have the advantages of fewer stitches (the ModifiedKugel technique plus the upper piece requires only three stitches, and the lumpectomy technique does not even require stitches, which can reduce chronic postoperative pain), wider coverage area (repairing the entire weak inguinal area at once can minimize the recurrence rate), and lower foreign body sensation, etc. The lumpectomy technique has become a mainstream repair technique in major cities such as Shanghai, and is very popular among patients.
