Recurrence rate of ovarian cancer after surgery

The recurrence rate of ovarian cancer after surgery ranks third in gynecologic malignancies and the mortality rate takes the first place. If the disease is not treated properly in the early stage, the recurrence rate can reach about 20%, and the recurrence rate in the middle and late stage is 70-85%, and recurrence is mostly seen in 2-3 years after surgery. Localized lesions and distant metastases may occur. Routine annual follow-up is recommended for high-risk groups. When a mass is found on ultrasound, the possibility of recurrence needs to be considered, and some patients may be combined with ascites, which in severe cases affects other organs, such as the intestines and lungs, manifesting as gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms or difficulty in defecation, or even coughing and hemoptysis.
