Medication for glaucoma

The international treatment guidelines for glaucoma are available in many countries, and the consensus for glaucoma treatment in China is to choose drug, laser and surgical treatment according to the patient’s IOP, visual field and fundus conditions, combined with hospital conditions and physician experience. A general principle is that closed-angle glaucoma is in principle to be treated with laser or surgery, because there is no drug that can prevent the onset of closed-angle glaucoma, and medication can only be added after laser or surgery is not yet possible and still not under control. The open-angle glaucoma, unless it is very advanced, generally speaking, open-angle glaucoma is always treated with medication, first with some eye drops, if the medication does not work, then use laser, laser does not work then use surgery, this is generally a process of treatment choice. In terms of lowering intraocular pressure, there are a lot of means now, but it’s just the use of anti-glaucoma drugs, where the drugs mainly refer to eye drops, of course, there are also some oral, intravenous drops, are temporary, not suitable for long-term use. Glaucoma is not curable at the present medical level, there is no one drug that can cure it, the main drug is to lower the intraocular pressure, oral and intravenous drops are not suitable for long-term use, the main drug treatment is to point eye medicine, lowering intraocular pressure. Different types of glaucoma and different individual patients should choose anti-glaucoma drops with different mechanisms of action, because glaucoma treatment is a long-term process, and in principle, we should try to use fewer types of drugs and fewer times, so that patients have good compliance and can adhere to the medication.
