Do gallbladder crystals hurt?

Gallbladder crystals are usually painless in the early stages, but can cause pain in the later stages when they cause cholecystitis and other problems. Gallbladder crystals are usually due to cholesterol deposition in the gallbladder, followed by crystal formation. These patients often have a history of reduced gallbladder function or high cholesterol. In the early stages, patients may have no obvious symptoms and do not experience pain. However, in severe cases, patients may have symptoms of bile dysfunction such as distention, chills and high fever, as well as symptoms of chronic cholecystitis such as right upper abdominal pain. Depending on the degree of thickening of the gallbladder wall or congestion and edema, the pain varies. In mild cases, dietary modifications can be made to help the bile to drain or circulate in a timely manner. Severe patients may be treated with medications to dissolve gallbladder crystals, such as ursodeoxycholic acid. Patients with gallbladder crystals should immediately go to a regular hospital for treatment to avoid delay.
