How to reduce a fever of 39 degrees

Patients with a fever of 39 degrees can be cooled down both physically as well as medically (e.g., aminopyrine), and should seek medical attention. Identify the cause of the fever and treat the cause. Physical cooling methods include drinking plenty of water, applying wet towels to the forehead, and wiping the armpits, neck, groin and other large blood vessels with warm water to take away heat through localized physical cooling. Drugs can be used to lower the temperature by using antipyretic and analgesic drugs, such as aminopyrine, indomethacin and ibuprofen. The medication should be administered under the guidance of a doctor. People tend to feel tired when they have a fever, so they should pay attention to rest and get enough sleep. The speed of fever reduction is related to the individual’s physical condition. If physical cooling is effective, medication may not be used to reduce the fever. If the fever does not improve after physical and medication cooling, the patient should go to the hospital as soon as possible.
