Grading of hemoptysis

The grading of hemoptysis is determined by the amount of hemoptysis. Small hemoptysis is defined as hemoptysis of less than 100 mL in 24 hours, while medium hemoptysis is defined as hemoptysis of 100-500 mL in 24 hours. Massive hemoptysis is usually defined as a total hemoptysis of more than 500 mL in 24 hours, or a one-time hemoptysis of 200-300 mL. Usually, patients with small amounts of hemoptysis can be stopped with medication without risk to life. Patients with large amounts of hemoptysis require interventional therapy to stop the bleeding, otherwise serious life-threatening risks may occur.
