What tests are needed for children with short stature?

There are many causes of short stature, including: some systemic diseases, endocrine diseases, genetic and metabolic diseases, chromosomal diseases and so on.

Therefore, a comprehensive and detailed medical history, family history consultation, physical examination and related auxiliary examinations should be done for children with short stature.

1) Height and weight measurement to evaluate growth and development and to understand the growth rate of height; 2) Detailed physical examination: in addition to the general physical examination, the staging of sexual development should be checked; 3) Auxiliary examinations: routine blood and urine, biochemical examination; thyroid function and other endocrine hormone measurements; chromosome examination for girls; bone age film; abdominal ultrasound; growth hormone stimulation test and insulin 4) Growth hormone (GH) stimulation test: This is a very important special test. It includes screening test and confirmatory test. Screening test generally takes the measurement of growth hormone before and after exercise to roughly determine whether growth hormone is lacking; confirming diagnosis requires drug excitation test: two drugs are selected to do excitation test, and the drugs selected are arginine, colistin, levodopa, pyridostigmine, insulin, etc. Blood was taken once before drug administration (0 min), and then three times each at 30, 60 and 90 min after drug administration to determine the growth hormone level.

5) Judgment of growth hormone results: Normal: GH>10 micrograms/L; Partial deficiency: 5 micrograms/L Complete deficiency: GH<5 micrograms/L; Comprehensive analysis to determine the diagnosis.
