What is ischemic optic neuropathy?

Ischemic optic neuropathy is an acute disorder of the arterial blood supply to the optic nerve causing ischemia and hypoxia to the optic nerve, resulting in damage to the optic nerve, which is equivalent to a small “stroke” of the optic nerve. It can be divided into anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and posterior ischemic optic neuropathy, with onset in one or both eyes, and there can be an interval between the onset in both eyes.
