What is a tonsilloma?

Like tumors in other areas, tonsillar tumors can be classified as benign or malignant. Malignant tonsillar tumors are mainly tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma and tonsillar lymphoma. The most common benign ones are tonsillar papilloma and hemangioma. The benign and malignant nature of tonsillar tumors needs to be confirmed by pathological examination.

The main symptom caused by benign tonsillar tumors is foreign body discomfort in the pharynx. The pharynx is a rich sensory area, and tumors growing on the tonsils can cause foreign body sensation. For some hemangiomas, rupture may also occur, causing problems such as bleeding.

Malignant tumors of the tonsils are currently uncommon. Since many people like to smoke and drink and other bad habits, this will largely increase the occurrence of malignant tumors of the tonsils. These bad habits can lead to an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsils. The longer these habits last, the higher the risk. The tonsils are an immune organ and lymphatic tumors of the head and neck can easily spread to this area, thus causing tonsillar lymphoma.

Treatment of tonsillar tumors, whether benign or malignant, is primarily surgical. Surgery is performed by tonsillectomy. For some malignant tonsillar tumors, radiotherapy or chemotherapy can be given in conjunction with different pathological histological types in order to kill as many cancer cells as possible.
