After the IUD is placed in a woman, it is possible for the IUD to become ectopic, or for the IUD to fall out. There are many causes of IUD displacement, including heavy physical activity after IUD insertion, or premature intercourse after IUD insertion, and the stimulation of intercourse causes significant contractions of the uterus and displacement of the IUD. A small number of women may also have had the IUD in place for too long, so there may be a natural displacement of the IUD. Once an ultrasound exam confirms that the IUD has shifted, it means that the ring is no longer effective as a contraceptive, so you should consider removing the ring directly. For women over 45 years old, it is not necessary to put the ring in for contraception.
