It is possible for a cerebral contusion to cause brainstem injury, i.e., the trauma directly or indirectly involves the brainstem, which can manifest itself in symptoms of brainstem dysfunction such as impaired consciousness and disturbed respiratory rhythms.
A cerebral contusion is a contusion or laceration of brain tissue caused by violence to the head. Brain stem injury due to cerebral contusion may be caused by external force directly impacting the brain stem, resulting in brain stem contusion; or external force causing fracture of the parieto-occipital region of the skull, thus stabbing the brain stem and causing its injury; or after the external force impacting the brain, resulting in the formation of intracranial hematomas, which compresses the brain stem and leads to brain stem injury.
Brain stem injury caused by cerebral contusion injury can appear on the same side of the eye movement disorder, facial paralysis, paralysis of the opposite side of the upper and lower limbs of the cross paralysis, consciousness disorders, respiratory rhythm disorders, limited eye movement, pupil size change, high fever, cardiac arrest and other manifestations.
It is recommended that people with this condition should consult a doctor in time to have a cranial imaging examination to determine the location and extent of the injury, and to take active treatment.
