With the development of surgical instruments and surgical techniques, the surgical methods of bariatric surgery have also progressed, from the initial cesarean surgery to the current minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, which has not only improved safety, but also has better surgical results than open surgery. Compared with traditional open surgery, laparoscopic bariatric surgery, which can significantly reduce intraoperative injuries and significantly improve the quality of life of patients, has gradually taken the lead over the years and is still evolving. In recent years, due to the improvement of medical equipment and operation technology, some domestic medical institutions have started to carry out transumbilical single-port laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Although this procedure is also a type of laparoscopic technique, it is different from the previous one in that it requires only one incision in the umbilicus, which hides the surgical scar well by using the natural scar in the umbilicus and is not easily visible after the wound heals. In addition, as one of the few medical institutions in China that can perform this surgery, co-founder of the Youdao Doctor’s Group, bariatric metabolic surgeon Professor Wu Liangping, also pointed out that in addition to the high aesthetic quality of the transumbilical single-port laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, it further improves the safety of the surgery. Compared to traditional multi-hole laparoscopic surgery, single-port surgery reduces the number of abdominal incisions and shortens the total length of the abdominal incision, which in turn reduces many postoperative complications and results in a faster recovery. Compared to multiport laparoscopic surgery, single-port surgery is more difficult and requires a higher level of proficiency, resulting in a relatively longer training period. However, with increased experience and improved instrumentation, this technique may become less difficult to train and thus more common.
