The Importance of Eye Health Screening

Ninety-five percent of the information we receive in our lifetime is obtained by our eyes, and bad eyes will affect our learning, work and life, so eye health is very important. Nowadays, people generally do not pay enough attention to eye health checkups, so many parents take their children to see their eyes and find that they have serious amblyopia, but they have already missed the best time for treatment; others go to the hospital for checkups only when their eyes are diseased, but it turns out that they are already in the late stage of the eye, so the doctors can’t provide much help at this time, which is really a pity. Yang Liang Yan, Ophthalmology Department, Ningbo Sixth Hospital We need to have eye health checkups at every stage of our lives. First of all, a newborn baby needs to have an eye health check, mainly to see if there are any congenital eye diseases, such as congenital cataracts, etc. If problems are found, they should be treated as soon as possible to avoid affecting the child’s vision in the future; if the baby is born prematurely, a detailed fundus examination should also be performed to rule out retinopathy of prematurity (this disease can seriously affect the baby’s vision and is related to excessive oxygen intake after premature birth). Children are taught to recognize vision charts by the time they reach 3-4 years of age, a stage when they need to have their vision and eye health checked. The purpose of the examination is to rule out congenital eye diseases and to see if the child has normal vision development, amblyopia and refractive error (i.e., myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism). After the examination and evaluation, if the child has amblyopia, it needs to be treated as early as possible, otherwise the best treatment period (vision development period) will be missed and the treatment effect will be affected; if the child is found to have refractive error (myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism) at this stage, timely correction and control treatment will also help to improve the child’s vision. Next is the study period of elementary school, secondary school and university, during which children have a heavy study load and mostly overload their eyes, coupled with the popularity of computers, tablets and smartphones, many children do not pay attention to normal eye use and use their eyes for a long time to make them tired, so refractive error (myopia, farsightedness or astigmatism) can easily occur. At this stage, at least once a year, medical optometry and eye pressure examination should be conducted to see if there is refractive error, refractive error has not developed, and to exclude some diseases such as congenital glaucoma. If you have refractive error problems, you must correct them as soon as possible, and after the age of 18, you can undergo excimer laser correction surgery to solve the problem of refractive error once and for all. When you enter the workforce as an adult, many organizations will organize medical checkups, but the items in general medical checkup centers are mainly blood tests, ultrasound, electrocardiograms, etc. The main screening is for diseases of internal organs, and the examination of the eyes is relatively simple, which is not enough for people’s eye health and prevention of eye diseases. The incidence of some diseases such as dry eye, tear duct obstruction, glaucoma and cataract increases with age year by year, so adults need a complete vision and eye health checkup at least once every two years. Early detection and treatment is the best principle. As we enter old age, not only does our vision deteriorate, but other eye pathologies also tend to develop, so we recommend that we must have a complete vision and eye health checkup once a year. If initial symptoms are found, they need to be treated as soon as possible. For some people who have high myopia, glaucoma and other eye diseases in their family, their incidence of related diseases will be higher than the general population, so they should be closely observed and it is recommended to have a complete vision and eye health checkup every six months, do not neglect.
