The reasons why the swelling has not subsided after a broken foot include no plaster braking, no elastic bandage fixation and no elevation of the lower limb, as follows:
1. No plaster braking: ankle bone fracture may have occurred, if there is no plaster braking and walking on the ground, it will cause the fracture to be displaced, and there will be increased swelling and pain, and sometimes there will be local joint deformity. Treatment requires ankle braking and rest, cold compresses in the early stage, hot compresses in the late stage, and anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling medications such as celecoxib and loxoprofen when necessary.
2. No elastic bandage fixation: After the foot is broken and not using elastic bandage fixation, it will make the damaged ligament difficult to repair, which will cause swelling for a long time. Treatment requires ankle brace braking, localized hot compresses, physiotherapy and other treatments.
3. No elevation of the lower limb: Although the foot is effectively fixed in plaster, the lower limb is not elevated during the period of fixation, which may cause the blood in the foot to be difficult to return, and a large amount of blood is stagnant in the damaged area, which will cause the swelling to persist. Elevation of the affected limb, massage, hot compresses and physiotherapy are needed.
If the swelling does not go down after breaking the foot, it is recommended that the patient should consult the hospital in time to clarify the cause of the swelling and then take the correct treatment.
