Generally no distinction is made between phlegm-drinking (a pathological product of impaired water-liquid metabolism) and phlegm-dampness. Both phlegm-drinking and phlegm-dampness are pathological products of impaired water-liquid metabolism, and they are both diseases of Chinese medicine. Phlegm-drinking is a type of disease in which the water in the body is not fully transported or fully transformed and utilized, and stagnates in certain parts of the body. It manifests as coughing up phlegm, phlegm sounding in the throat, chest tightness, dizziness and other manifestations. Phlegm-dampness in most cases refers to the patient’s spleen and stomach weakness, the body’s water can not be transported and transformed, and over time generated phlegm or dampness. It manifests as obesity, heavy limbs (weakness and heaviness of limbs), and sticky stools. Phlegm-drink and phlegm-dampness are both disorders of water metabolism, so no distinction is generally made. Drink is more symptomatic than Dampness. Drink stays mostly in the stomach and intestines, chest and ribs, chest and diaphragm, skin and other parts of the body. Dampness, on the other hand, tends to spread throughout the body in a diffuse state, easily obstructing the spleen and earth (dampness damage obstructing the spleen), leading to spleen deficiency. If there are symptoms of phlegm-drinking or phlegm-dampness, one should consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
