Redness, swelling and hardness in the arm after diphtheria vaccination may be related to malabsorption or vaccination reaction. If the patient’s symptoms are mild, they usually resolve on their own after 2-3 days and subside completely in about 1 week.
The diphtheria vaccine is a combination of three vaccines for pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus, and there are certain adverse reactions after vaccination. However, if the symptoms are mild, they are normal and do not need to be overly worried, and children can recover on their own. However, if the swelling persists and is accompanied by secondary infection, the child should be seen by a pediatrician immediately and closely monitored for normal mental status, diet and stools. If a high fever is present, the child should be given heat treatment as prescribed by the doctor.
It is recommended that the child be kept in contact with the vaccination site as little as possible after the injection, and that the area be kept dry, clean and hygienic.
