Recently, I stumbled across the headlines “Girl gets pregnant after swimming” and “Man masturbates in Sanya swimming water causing pregnancy in 10 women” on the web, which is simply ridiculous. If you write such headlines, either the journalists themselves are ignorant, or they lack the responsibility of the media and are just clamoring for attention. We should not be misled by irresponsible editors, and today we will peel away the false veneer of these fake news in a scientific and rigorous manner. What are the conditions needed to get pregnant? The most basic condition is: healthy sperm and eggs. The production of sperm depends on the normal testicular sperm production function of men and the production of eggs depends on the normal reproductive endocrine function of women, and sperm and eggs can only survive in a suitable internal environment, including the right temperature, pH, inorganic salt ions, vitamins, enzymes and so on. An abnormal environment can lead to destruction of sperm morphology, reduced numbers, decreased motility, loss of fertilization, or death. Once the egg is produced, it quietly waits for the arrival of the bravest of sperm. To meet the egg, the sperm has to be strong enough to move forward, because the road ahead is full of hurdles. After a cloud of rain, the sperm arrives deep in the vaginal fornix, has to pass through the sticky cervical mucus, enter the uterus through the cervical opening, and then choose its direction and enter the oviductal jug. Many sperm lose in this process and only about 200 strong sperm can break through to the egg, where again, after a fierce competition, usually only 1 sperm can successfully break through the egg’s shell and enter the egg cell to complete fertilization. Fertilization cannot be considered as pregnancy, as the fertilized egg gradually moves along the fallopian tube to the uterus and settles in the fertile “soil” of the uterus. As you can see, the process from the creation of the spermatozoa to pregnancy consists of many steps, any interruption of which can lead to pregnancy failure. Let’s take a look at how many coincidences have to be met at the same time, assuming an unplanned pregnancy in a swimming pool. First, there has to be a man of bad character whose semen enters the pool after some kind of behavior; second, the water in the pool has the right temperature and pH, or this sperm has a strong adaptability and mobility to survive in pool water with sterilized ingredients and miscellaneous bacteria, and still maintain a good mobility and fertilization function; third, the semen can precisely find the ” entrance”, and the swimsuit of innocent women can’t stop these unwanted guests; fourth, innocent women have ovulation around 72 hours, and the cervical mucus is thin. And statistics tell us that even if ovulation is monitored to guide conception, there are still about 10% of couples of childbearing age who are anxious about infertility every year, so accidental conception in the pool is simply a boring lie made up by an ignorant person.
