Introduction to Blepharoplasty

Eye bags are an aging phenomenon characterized by loose skin under the lower eyelid, fatty bulges, and enlarged lower lid orbicularis muscle. In addition, kidney disease, pregnancy, lack of sleep or fatigue can cause fluid to accumulate under the eyes and form bags. This phenomenon tends to make people look old and haggard. Due to the different reasons for the formation of under-eye bags, the forms in which it manifests itself also differ: 1, simple orbicularis oculi hypertrophy type due to genetic factors, there are obvious bags under the eyes at a young age. It is characterized by a continuous curved distribution near the lower lid margin, but the skin is not sagging, mostly seen in young people aged 20-35. 2.Simple skin laxity This is a case of lower lid and outer canthus skin laxity, but no orbital septum laxity, so no orbital fat protrusion, small wrinkles around the eyes, often accompanied by the outer corner of the eye drooping, mostly seen in 30-45 years old middle-aged people. 3. The lower eyelid fat is mildly to moderately bulging, mainly due to congenital overdevelopment of the orbital septum fat, mostly seen in middle-aged and young adults between the ages of 25-40. This is also caused by genetic factors and overnight stays. 4. Moderate to severe bulging of the lower eyelid is accompanied by skin laxity of the lower eyelid, mainly the skin, orbicularis oculi muscle and orbital septum, causing the orbital fat to prolapse due to gravity, and in severe cases the canthal ligament is lax, the lid plate is ectropion and the lid ball is separated, often resulting in tearing, mostly in middle-aged and elderly people aged 40-70. Treatment is both surgical and non-surgical: for loose skin and orbicularis oculi hypertrophy, surgery is often performed to remove the loose skin and hypertrophic orbicularis oculi and to remove the bulging fat. For the pure fat bulge type, the excess fat can be removed using an incision within the lid, without an incision on the outer skin of the lower lid, which is often called non-operative eye bag removal. Surgical methods: 1. For patients with good skin elasticity and simple orbicularis oculi hypertrophy, only a small amount of the orbicularis oculi can be removed without removing fat. 2.For those with simple skin laxity, only the excess skin needs to be removed without destroying the tissues, such as orbicularis muscle and orbital fat. 3, For young patients with good skin elasticity and moderate to severe bulging of the lower lid, the conjunctival pathway, which is the internal pathway, can be chosen to remove the excess orbital fat. Since their skin has good elasticity, there is no skin laxity, the incision scar outside the skin is avoided, there is little trauma, light swelling, or even no postoperative swelling, and the procedure is safer. 4. For those with loose skin and moderate to severe lower lid bulging, an incision through the skin of the lid margin is required to remove excess skin, remove the prolapsed excess orbital fat, and tighten the orbital septum and orbicularis muscle at the same time. In cases of lower lid ectropion, an external canthal fixation is performed to correct the lower lid ectropion, which is the only way to obtain a good cosmetic result. Due to improvements in technology and surgical materials in recent years, the results are excellent and recovery is possible in a very short period of time. At the same time, it is important to get enough sleep, drink less water before going to sleep, and cushion your pillow appropriately to allow the water that tends to accumulate in the eyelid area to disperse through blood circulation; massage your eyelids gently and often to promote blood circulation through muscle movement; wash your face before massage and apply the right amount of massage cream; eat more vitamin A and vitamin B2 rich foods such as carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, animal liver, and beans as appropriate Balancing the nutritional structure of the body. All will reduce the premature appearance of bags under the eyes.
