Children’s Neurology and Rehabilitation Ward provides a protective umbrella for children with cerebral palsy
Children with cerebral palsy, where do they go from here?
There is a group of people who cannot stand and speak at a young age, facing lifelong intellectual disability or paralysis, and still cannot take care of themselves as adults, and can only face the world stiffly in their old age. This is all because of it – cerebral palsy!
According to statistics, there are more than 6 million cerebral palsy patients in China, and children and adolescents account for more than 60% of them, including 1.78 million children under 12 years old with cerebral palsy, and 40,000 to 50,000 new cases of cerebral palsy every year.
Children with cerebral palsy can be seen everywhere in the child neurology and rehabilitation ward. The children’s ignorant eyes and the parents’ longing and persistent gaze are touching. A child with cerebral palsy often has to repeat a simple grasping action thousands of times in the eyes of a normal child; a normal child can run and jump like a fly, but a child with cerebral palsy falls and gets up again and again in order to take a standard posture. ……
Four major causes of cerebral palsy
According to Professor Yuan Baoqiang, cerebral palsy is mainly caused by premature birth, difficult birth, asphyxia and jaundice, but in fact any damaging factors that cause ischemia, hypoxia, brain cell damage or poisoning in fetal and neonatal brain tissues can cause irreversible brain damage and lead to cerebral palsy. “Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive motor impairment and postural abnormality caused by damage to the immature brain for various reasons in children before birth to one month after birth, and can be accompanied by various degrees of intellectual, language, visual and auditory impairments.”
Cerebral palsy symptoms Cerebral palsy manifests itself differently at different stages of growth. In the early stage, there will be frequent unexplained crying, restless sleep, easy frightening or drowsiness, weak sucking, difficulty in swallowing, easy vomiting, hard or soft limbs, little or asymmetrical active movement of limbs, and abnormal posture during the first month after birth. As the child grows older, the child’s gross movements such as head raising, rolling over, sitting, crawling, standing, walking and gross and fine movements of the hands are lagging behind; the child has drooling, slurred speech, dull face and low intelligence; secondary disorders such as joint contracture, dislocation and scoliosis may also occur.
Misconceptions about cerebral palsy treatment
”In the treatment of children with cerebral palsy, parents often have some misconceptions.” According to Prof. Yuan Baoqiang, firstly, many parents are always reluctant to believe that their children have the disease due to lack of parenting knowledge, and often miss the best rehabilitation period when they come to the clinic.
Secondly, parents are paralyzed and have a fluke mentality. “We found many children in the clinical consultation process, unfortunately, if early detection and early treatment, there can be great improvement. Now treatment even if you can recover, it will take longer, the difficulty has increased, and may also leave sequelae.” Professor Yuan Baoqiang said, in fact, as long as there are such high-risk factors as premature birth, low weight, jaundice, difficult birth, asphyxia, and backward motor development along with neurodevelopmental abnormalities such as head tilting back, inability to extend the fist, and stiff limbs, it can generally be judged as brain injury.
The main treatment for cerebral palsy is comprehensive rehabilitation
”The treatment of cerebral palsy is mainly comprehensive rehabilitation, with functional training and massage, together with acupuncture, physiotherapy, drugs and language, etc. Brain activator, nerve growth factor and traditional Chinese medicine only have certain effect in the early stage. In foreign countries, cerebral palsy treatment rarely uses drugs and is mainly motor rehabilitation.” Dr. Zhang Yingying, chief physician of the Children’s Neurology and Rehabilitation Ward of Xu Medical Hospital, told reporters that there is no drug that can cure the disease, so parents should never believe in any miracle cure. Many parents burn incense and worship Buddha for their children, but the money spent is small, but when the children are older, it will be more and more difficult to treat them.
Umbrella” for children with cerebral palsy
There are PT rooms, OT rooms, physiotherapy rooms and interactive rooms in the pediatric neurology and rehabilitation ward of Xu Medical Hospital. In consideration of the special characteristics of children, all treatment rooms are padded to ensure the safety and comfort of children in the treatment rooms. At the same time, a pediatric rehabilitation clinic is set up in the pediatric outpatient clinic area to facilitate children’s consultation and follow-up.
With excellent specialists, professional rehabilitation team and advanced medical equipment, the pediatric neurology and rehabilitation ward of XUMC provides an umbrella of protection for children with cerebral palsy and brings hope to the families of children with cerebral palsy.

In addition, the children’s neurology and rehabilitation ward of XUMC also adopts advanced physical therapy equipment at home and abroad, such as myoelectric biofeedback therapy instrument, digital meridian guide therapy instrument, spastic muscle therapy instrument, etc. to reduce the muscle tone of some children with cerebral palsy and promote their autonomy training ability so as to enhance their muscle strength, and at the same time, it can play a role in pain relief, blood activation, anti-inflammation, restoration of atrophied muscles and strengthening immunity.
Humanized and warm atmosphere
In addition to well-equipped and advanced treatment rooms, the pediatric neurology and rehabilitation ward also has safe, comfortable and spacious wards. Each ward has carefully drawn cartoon murals to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere for the children on a psychological level.
