Do all pediatric strabismus require surgery? What is the best time for surgical treatment?

Treatment of strabismus is divided into conservative treatment (including non-surgical methods such as wearing glasses) and surgical treatment. If a child has both strabismus and amblyopia, the treatment principle is to treat the amblyopia first and then the strabismus surgically. In general, the best results for congenital strabismus are considered to be between the ages of 1.5 and 2 years old, but the timing of surgery is determined clinically according to the child’s cooperation with the examination. It is still safe to operate on children who are more than 1 year old, but there is a risk of re-operation. Parents should cooperate with their doctors if they diagnose the need for surgery after several hospitals. If the onset of strabismus is early and the angle of strabismus is large, it is still important to have surgery in a timely manner so that the child has the opportunity to rebuild binocular vision. If it is done later, it is likely to be a simple cosmetic surgery and will not play a good role in improving the child’s stereopsis.
