How to decoct herbs correctly?

A. Choice of decoction utensils: It is best to use casserole and ceramic pots, because the heat transfer is slower and more insulating, and not easy to chemically react with Chinese medicine. You can’t use aluminum, copper or iron pots and pans. Decoction water: The usual drinking water is sufficient. Third, the appropriate amount of water: put the medicine into the pot and use chopsticks to hold it down, then add water, the first time adding 2-3cm above the medicine, the second time adding just over the Chinese medicine or more than 0.5cm can be. Soaking time: Before decocting a medicine, you generally need to soak it for half an hour to an hour, longer in winter and shorter in summer. Soaking can restore the drug to a fresh state and make it easier for the active ingredients to come out. Five, decoction fire and time: first 2-3 minutes on high heat, to boil the water and then turn the fire to a minimum, keep the water in the pot basically in the open state. For general drugs or tonic drugs, keep the water boiling for half an hour or more, while for some antidotes and aromatic volatile drugs, keep the water boiling for 15-20 minutes. Sixth, filtration and slagging juice: decoction should be filtered in a timely manner, immediately separate the soup, because some active ingredients will be adsorbed in the slag after the temperature is reduced, affecting the efficacy. After the separation, the dregs should be poured into a clean gauze or clean cloth, and the water inside the dregs should be squeezed or pressed out as much as possible, otherwise at least 1/3 of the active ingredients of a dose will be lost. Decoction times: Generally decoction 2-3 times, mixed together in two to three doses. Special decoction method: 1. First decoction: The method of decocting certain drugs for 30-60 minutes, then adding other soaked drugs to the decoction. Generally used for some minerals, shells, active ingredients dissolved in difficulty or some toxic drugs, with the prolongation of the decoction time will reduce the toxicity, such as sophora, Chuan Wu, Cao Wu. 2, after the next: refers to some drugs are not suitable for long decoction, need to be put in when the drug is almost ready, decoction three or five minutes is enough. It is usually used for aromatic drugs or drugs whose active ingredients are not resistant to high temperature. 3.Wrap decoction: Some drugs need to be wrapped in gauze or clean cloth and then decocted with other drugs. It is generally used for drugs that make the soup cloudy, fine granular drugs and hairy drugs. 4.Separate decoction: Some drugs are not decocted with other drugs, but need to be decocted separately, and then the two decoctions are mixed together. Generally used for precious herbs. 5.Melting: A method to turn solid drugs into liquid, mainly used for gums, such as gum and deer horn gum. Put the gum into a small bowl, add a little water to it, then heat it in a pot, let it melt slowly, mix it in the decoction, and drink it together. 6.Rush: Some liquid drugs, water-soluble drugs (mannitol) or bulk or powdered drugs, put them in water or soup and dissolve them. Nine, the method of taking drugs: generally all drugs should be avoided and food at the same time, should be taken before or after a meal of half an hour to an hour. Some dewormers or laxatives require morning or early morning on an empty stomach. The reason for taking drugs after meals is that some drugs tend to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract, and taking them after meals can reduce the stimulating effect of drugs on the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, some digestive drugs can be taken one hour after a meal, which is conducive to help digestion. Tranquilizers are generally taken before bedtime. If the condition is acute, you can take two or three doses a day, or if the condition is very slow, you can take two doses in three days or one dose in two days. Generally, medicines are taken in a warm state. However, some sweating medications may require the patient to take them hot to help promote sweating. If it is a hot disease sometimes the medicine can also be taken slightly cooler, and if it is a cold disease evidence, the solution may be required to be taken slightly warmer.
