What does a high total bile acid in pregnant women mean?

Bile acids are a group of metabolites of cholesterol decomposition in the liver and intestine-hepatic circulation, and are closely related to the absorption, metabolism and regulation of cholesterol. If pregnant women have high total bile acids, it may be related to the following conditions: 1, pregnant women eat too much high-fat and high-protein foods, such as eggs, milk, soy products or fish, which cause physiological elevation of total bile acids; 2, pregnant women suffer from underlying diseases before pregnancy, such as liver cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, etc. These diseases are not treated in time, which can also cause pregnant women elevated bile acids; 3, related to pregnancy itself, such as intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. The cause of this disease is still unclear and may be related to female estrogen levels, genetic factors, immune factors and environmental factors, etc. It occurs in the middle and late stages of pregnancy and can endanger the health of the pregnant woman and the fetus, causing not only a decrease in liver function, jaundice and postpartum hemorrhage, but also intrauterine ischemia and hypoxia, intrauterine distress, early abortion and intrauterine death. If a pregnant woman has high total bile acid, she should actively go to the hospital, check her liver function, perform fetal heart monitoring, etc., and then carry out targeted treatment after identifying the specific cause.
