What is the prognosis for intussusception?

Generally, intussusception is categorized into childhood and adult types. The prognosis of intussusception is related to the cause of the disease and whether it is treated in time, and the prognosis varies greatly. In children, the prognosis is generally good if the intussusception is detected in time and treated effectively, and the intestinal tube can be reset successfully before necrosis occurs; if the intestinal tube is necrotic when detected late or not intervened in time and effectively, it can lead to peritonitis or sepsis, and in serious cases, it can lead to shock or death, which requires surgical treatment and removal of necrotic and diseased intestinal tube. Adult-onset intussusception, usually caused by benign lesions such as intestinal polyps and diverticula, can usually be cured; if it is caused by malignant tumors, the prognosis usually depends on the stage of the patient’s disease. Most of the early stage patients can be cured by surgery, while the prognosis of the late stage patients is poorer. Patients with intussusception should seek timely medical treatment and follow the doctor’s instructions for early detection, early treatment and early recovery.
