How to treat keloid scars from ear piercings

After ear piercing, the untreated inflammatory reaction leads to the formation of subcutaneous connective tissue hyperplasia, resulting in keloid scars, which can also occur if one has a family history of keloid scars. For treatment, avoid getting wet after ear piercing to prevent infection, and if an inflammatory reaction occurs, topical erythromycin ointment needs to be applied immediately. In the case of small keloids, treatment with liquid nitrogen freezing can be applied and can also be combined with local closure treatment with compound betamethasone injection. In the case of large keloids, surgical excision, skin grafting, and radiation therapy may be an option. During the treatment period, it is necessary to abstain from spicy and irritating foods and from alcohol. Therefore, if a keloid develops after ear piercing, the patient needs to go to a regular hospital and be treated under the guidance of a dermatologist, especially for patients with a family history of keloid, and choose surgical excision treatment carefully.
