TIPPS Surgery for Esophageal Variceal Hemorrhage

TIPPS is the acronym for transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt. It is an interventional method to establish a bypass channel between the portal vein and the main branches of the hepatic vein in the liver, that is, a catheter is placed through the jugular vein to guide the support tube to bridge between the hepatic vein and the portal vein. This treatment reduces the portal pressure significantly, is less invasive and safer, is performed quickly and easily under local anesthesia, has little impact on liver function, and is suitable for some critical and lost surgical opportunities of advanced cirrhosis combined with esophageal variceal hemorrhage by The bleeding can be controlled within 24 hours. This procedure is performed in a digital subtraction room. The requirements for the operator are more stringent. It also carries some risk and requires a family signature. Postoperative fever, mild jaundice, and elevated transaminases are often possible. Longer-term anticoagulants, such as warfarin and Bactrim, are required to prevent obstruction of the placed catheter after surgery. The long-term outcome remains to be further observed and evaluated.
