There are four main care measures for primary irritant nappy dermatitis: change nappies regularly, reduce irritation, apply buttock cream and keep dry.
Change nappies regularly to reduce irritation: when a baby has nappy dermatitis, it is necessary to change nappies more regularly to reduce the irritation of urine and faeces on the skin. Parents can check the nappies every 2 to 3 hours and change them promptly if the nappy has absorbed a lot of urine; if there is faeces, it should be changed immediately.
Apply buttock cream and keep it dry: wash your baby’s bottom with warm water after each stool, dip it gently into dryness after washing and apply buttock cream containing zinc oxide or petroleum jelly, and usually expose your bottom to the air more often.
Choose soft nappies and treat diarrhoea aggressively if you have it.
