Sudden enlargement of parotid gland may be caused by parotid inflammation, parotid tumor or trauma.
1. Mumps: usually children commonly have mumps, which starts sharply with fever, and the parotid glands are obviously enlarged in a few hours to 1⁓2 days. The disease is self-limiting and is mainly treated with symptomatic therapy, including bed rest or the use of sulfonamide antibiotics.
2. Parotid tumor: benign or malignant tumors can cause nodular or cystic masses in the parotid gland, which can be obviously enlarged. Treatment is mainly surgical removal of parotid gland.
3. Trauma: trauma to the parotid area causes parotid enlargement. Hot compresses should be applied 3 days after the injury, which can effectively reduce the swelling.
If the above symptoms occur, the cause of the disease should be identified in time and treated according to the cause so as not to delay the disease.
