Turmeric has the effect of breaking blood and moving qi, clearing menstruation and relieving pain. It is used in the treatment of stabbing pain in the chest and ribs, chest paralysis (stuffy pain in the chest), heart pain and other conditions. Turmeric belongs to the group of medicines that activate blood circulation and eliminate blood stasis (promoting blood circulation and eliminating blood stasis in the body), and is pungent, bitter and warm in nature. It belongs to the spleen and liver meridians. It is mainly used for treating dysmenorrhea and menstrual occlusion, obstruction in the abdomen, rheumatism, shoulder and arm pain, and swelling and pain in falling and thumping. It can be used with Angelica sinensis, Mucuna pruriens and Wu Yao for treating chest pain caused by chest yang deficiency and paralysis of the heart veins; it can be used with Citrus aurantium dulcis, Gui Xin and Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae for treating chest pain caused by stagnation of qi in the liver and stomach and condensation of qi in the chest and hypochondrium; it can also be used with Radix Angelicae sinensis, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong and Safflower for treating menstrual pain caused by qi stagnation with blood stagnation (blood stagnation because of lack of qi circulation), menstrual closure, and postpartum abdominal pain. It should be noted that it should be taken with caution in cases of blood deficiency without qi stagnation and blood stasis (due to blood stasis caused by lack of circulation of qi) and in pregnant women.
