The nodule has been stable for 5 years, should I continue to follow up? In our clinical work, patients often ask, “Dr. Xie, my nodule has been followed up for 5 years, and there is no change so far, so is it possible to stop following up in the future, and will it not grow any more? Unlike solid nodules, in our clinical practice, if a solid nodule has not changed after 2 years of follow-up, it can basically be declared as a benign lesion and no follow-up is needed. If a ground glass nodule does not change after 5 years of follow-up, it cannot be ruled out that it may continue to grow in the future, and in some patients, it may not even grow until 8-10 years later. Unfortunately, after 5 years of follow-up, one should not be blindly optimistic and should continue to follow up and observe. Long-TermFollow-UpofGround-GlassNodulesAfter5YearsofStability This is an article reported by Korean scholars, published in JTO journal, where they found a group of patients, followed up for 5 years, stabilized the GGN without enlargement, and then continued the follow-up for a total of at least 10 years, and in about 13.6% of these patients, there were nodes that had nodal enlargement. In our clinical work, we do have nodules that have increased in size after 8-10 years of follow-up for reasons that are unclear, so a full 5 years of follow-up without enlargement is not a guarantee of safety for a ground glass nodule.
