Interventional treatment for lung cancer, a great way to kill tumors with precision!

The legendary Dutch footballer Cruyff was diagnosed with lung cancer. Although Cruyff expressed his confidence in overcoming the disease after the diagnosis, lung cancer is still a terminal disease that most people are afraid of. Lung cancer is the number one disease in China in terms of incidence and mortality rate, and the mortality rate is increasing at a rate of 4.45% per year. However, with the advent of precision medicine, many new treatment methods have greatly improved the overall survival and quality of life of patients with advanced lung cancer. With the help of image-guided minimally invasive interventions, doctors are now able to pinpoint cancer cells in the lungs and kill them precisely, greatly improving the accuracy of lung cancer diagnosis, and the treatment effect is comparable to that of traditional methods. Smoking, air pollution and cooking fumes are the main causes of lung cancer. According to the data, the number of new lung cancer cases in China has been increasing every year in recent decades, and it is expected that 1 million people will die from lung cancer in China every year by 2025. In the past few days, Beijing has also been under a haze. Experts from the Beijing Cancer Control Office have publicly stated that the incidence of lung cancer in Beijing has increased by about 43% in 10 years, and the age of lung cancer incidence tends to be younger. Previously, China’s first study to assess the impact of long-term PM2.5 exposure on public health was released, and the report pointed out that atmospheric PM2.5 pollution led to 257,000 excess deaths in 31 provincial capitals or municipalities directly under the central government, with an average excess mortality rate of nearly 1 per 1,000. And among the excess deaths, a significant portion is lung cancer. Among the causative factors of lung cancer, smoking, air pollution and cooking fumes are listed as the most important ones, said Liu Chen. These are some of the symptoms to be alert to the possibility of lung cancer Lung cancer, like most cancers, does not have insignificant early symptoms. Patients with lung cancer are most likely to have cough symptoms because some of the cancers grow in the larger bronchial tubes, so an irritating cough is often present. For example, if the irritating cough lasts for more than 2-3 weeks; if the cough is prolonged due to other diseases and suddenly worsens; if blood appears in the sputum or coughs up blood, these kinds of coughs should be alert to the occurrence of lung cancer. Some patients may have symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath and fever due to the obstruction of larger bronchial lumen caused by tumor. In addition, when progressively increasing lumps appear at the clavicle of the neck; persistent pain in the chest or bone joints; unexplained weight loss, etc., the possibility of lung cancer should also be thought of and excluded first. Puncture biopsy results become the “gold standard” for lung cancer diagnosis When doctors suspect that a patient has lung cancer, they will recommend chest X-ray, CT, blood sampling, etc. However, these are not the ultimate means to confirm the diagnosis of lung cancer. However, these are not the final means to confirm the diagnosis of lung cancer. Currently, the most powerful evidence to confirm the diagnosis is to see lung cancer cells under the microscope, which is often called pathological diagnosis, because the morphology of cancer cells under the microscope is essentially different from normal cells. Because of the accuracy of pathological diagnosis, it is recognized as the “gold standard” for lung cancer diagnosis in the industry. The more common clinical method to confirm the diagnosis is lung aspiration biopsy. This method can directly obtain the tissue components inside the suspected lung cancer lesion, and after professional processing by pathologists, the cell morphology inside the tissue can be observed under the microscope to identify whether the cells are cancerous. The advantages of puncture biopsy are high diagnostic accuracy and low misdiagnosis rate. Although the invasive operation may cause potential traumatic complications to the human body, it is minimally invasive and painful with minimal risk occurrence under the operation of experienced specialists. Advantages of interventional means in lung cancer treatment The survival period of lung cancer is related to many factors such as nutritional status, physical quality and psychosocial situation. Active anti-cancer mindset, proper nutritional support and physical exercise are all essential to prolong lung cancer survival. In addition, with the increasing popularity of precision medicine, the treatment means for lung cancer have become more diverse. In addition to traditional surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, minimally invasive interventional therapy under imaging guidance can also eliminate the pain of surgery and radiotherapy for many tumor patients. The most obvious advantage of interventional therapy is that it is minimally invasive. A puncture needle of two to three millimeters in diameter is inserted into the body and kills the tumor directly in situ. For example, radiofrequency ablation can be used to burn the tumor to death, or cryoablation can be used to freeze the tumor to death, or even chemotherapy drugs or radiation source particles can be directly injected into the tumor through that puncture needle. . In the last decade or so, interventional therapy has not only achieved excellent results in patients with advanced inoperable disease, but has also been comparable to traditional surgery in terms of local cure rates in some patients with early-stage tumors.
