Acute tonsillitis is an acute inflammation of the palatine tonsils. It is mostly caused by viral infections in the early stage and later by Streptococcus haemolyticus, S. pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus infections. Most of them are caused by low immunity of the body, multiplication of bacteria hidden in the oral cavity or pharynx, or invasion by foreign pathogens. It usually occurs more often in children and young adults.
Clinical manifestations include: pronounced pain in the pharynx, aggravation of swallowing, unfavorable swallowing, difficulty with speech and eating. Fever, headache, malaise, and aching of the extremities. Examination may reveal congested, enlarged tonsils with yellow-white pus spots in the crypt and enlarged cervical lymph nodes with pressure pain. If the infection caused by acute tonsillitis spreads, it can also cause peri-tonsillar abscesses, otitis media, sinusitis and bronchitis. If the infection is caused by Streptococcus haemolyticus, it is important to pay attention to the complications of the infection, such as rheumatic fever, arthritis, myocarditis, etc. During the illness, it is important to take rest, drink more water or supplemental fluids, and eat easy-to-digest, cool food during the illness, not too hot or spicy food. Physical cooling and necessary antipyretic agents can be given according to the temperature change. Adequate and full course of antibiotic application, preferably penicillin or erythromycin family. It can be combined with the application of gargle or warm saline.
