How to decoct and take Huanglian Xieyu Tang

Huanglian detoxification soup is usually taken with decoction of water. In ancient times, it was often used to boil four herbs, including Huanglian and Scutellaria baicalensis, with six liters of water to make two liters, which was divided into two doses.
Huanghuang Xie Tu Tang is a formula, which is a basic formula for clearing heat and removing toxins, composed of Huang Huang Lian, Scutellaria baicalensis, Huang Bai and Gardenia, with the efficacy of diarrhea and detoxification, it can be used for treating the evidence of the heat of San Jiao fire and toxin to improve the symptoms of irritability of the great heat, dryness of the mouth and pharynx, sleeplessness of the wrong language, vomiting of blood in heat diseases, epistaxis and other diseases.
It is recorded in “Wai Tai Secret Essence” that Huang Lian Xie Tu Tang is made by first adding six liters of water with four herbs, namely Huang Lian, Huang Baicalin, Huang Bai, and Gardenia, then boiled into two liters, and finally divided into two doses. Modern usage is to decoct with water.
It should be noted that this formula, being a bitter and cold agent, is prone to injure the spleen and stomach if taken for a long time or in excess, so it should not be used by those who are not suffering from a high level of fire.
