According to WHO, 51.1% of cancer patients treated have different degrees of pain, 70% of advanced cancer patients consider cancer pain as the main symptom, and 30% of cancer patients have unbearable and severe pain. It can be seen that cancer pain is a common worldwide problem. Effective analgesic treatment is very important to improve the quality of life of cancer patients. In addition to symptomatic pain relief on analgesics, active TCM specialties including prick and bloodletting and plantar reflex zone treatment have the characteristics of easy to implement, small side effects and remarkable efficacy, which are the special TCM methods for cancer pain. In the early stage of cancer, the incidence of cancer pain is low because the tumor is still small and usually has no metastasis; in the late stage, the lesions are larger and keep growing infiltratively to nearby tissues and organs, and there are often distant metastases such as bone marrow. Therefore, the incidence of cancer pain is greatly increased. Most of the cancer pains are persistent and increase with the increase of lesions. In addition to conventional Western medicine analgesia, the Department of Integrative Medicine and Oncology also carries out special Chinese medicine treatment, which has achieved good results. According to the different diseases of the patients, the acupuncture needle or thick and pointed needle is used to apply acupuncture at certain points or superficial blood channels on the patient’s body to release appropriate amount of blood to achieve the purpose of external treatment of the disease. The theoretical basis of bloodletting therapy is based on the theory of meridians and the theory of qi and blood in Chinese medicine. According to Chinese medicine, meridians have the function of communicating with internal and external organs and limbs, and they are the channels for the flow of qi and blood, which “belong to internal organs and external limbs”. The meridians are the bridge between the inside and outside of the body, with the role of infiltration of qi and blood, moisten the whole body. And qi and blood is the root of human activity. Qi and blood parallel in the veins, moisten and nourish the whole body, the body’s various physiological activities, are dependent on the normal operation of Qi and blood, and through the meridians to play its physiological functions. Qi and blood and meridians are not only the normal physiological foundation of the body, but also an important pathogenic transformation of disease. When the body’s internal organs and meridians are dysfunctional, diseases will occur in the body, and the meridians will show corresponding pathological changes such as congestion, expansion, and even deformation. Acupuncture and bloodletting can unblock the stagnant qi and blood in the meridians, adjust the dysfunction of the internal organs, and normalize the series of lesions caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis, thus achieving the purpose of treating diseases.
