To take medicine or not to take medicine when a breastfeeding mother is sick?

Some mothers say they are sick during breastfeeding, but because of the fear of taking medicine, the milk will “accidentally” to the baby, so they have been “hard to carry”, the result of the final condition aggravated …… also once I have heard of a mother who got mastitis during breastfeeding and held on to it without taking any medication, and the result was getting worse and worse, every time the child ate milk, the mother was like on torture …… Hearing this I was really heartbroken, why not take medication? This is something that I understand as a mother. The first thing you need to do is not to take any medication when you are breastfeeding, but this does not mean that you have to take it all for granted. It’s not that you can’t use drugs while breastfeeding, but you should choose drugs that are safer for your baby. Mothers who are breastfeeding or are about to give birth may also want to have some basic knowledge about the use of medication during breastfeeding to be aware of it. This is based on the information issued by the U.S. Drug and Food Administration (FDA), about the risk level of drugs during breastfeeding, L1 and L2 are the most secure and safe, you can look at this table: [Figure 1] About antibiotics, the following table is a hospital regulations (this table from the network), you can check the corresponding antibiotic types and the table of “breastfeeding classification You can check the corresponding antibiotic class and the “breastfeeding classification” in the table, and then combine it with the classification in Figure 1, you can know the danger level of different kinds of antibiotics: [Figure 2] There are also several drugs that need special attention during breastfeeding, which should be avoided as much as possible. The drugs in this table will appear later in the article, but mothers need to pay extra attention to their use: [Figure 3] The corresponding drugs for different kinds of diseases, examples of common drugs that are safer during breastfeeding, mothers can consult according to their actual situation and disease: [Figure 4] Some diseases need to be checked by instruments, the following common tests, which do not affect breastfeeding, mothers can rest assured: [Figure 5] There are also some diseases that need to be checked by instruments. Figure 5] There are also these cases, is absolutely not breastfeeding: [Figure 6] for some common diseases during lactation, in terms of drug safety to do the following summary: 1, lactation cold and fever 90% of colds are caused by viruses, the human immune system needs 3-5 days to produce specific antibodies, the virus will be cleared, such as fever, is the body’s normal defense response, you need to be patient Just wait, drink more water and rest. It is important to note that if the temperature rises above 38°C and the mother’s body is very uncomfortable, you can choose acetaminophen or ibuprofen – the most widely used and safest fever reducer, safe to take during breastfeeding. 2, diarrhea during breastfeeding stomach If a breastfeeding mother has diarrhea symptoms, it is recommended to go to the hospital first to check whether it is caused by “bacterial infection”. ①Bacterial infection causing diarrhea: Your doctor will help you determine if you need antibiotic treatment, please tell your doctor in advance that you are breastfeeding, and your doctor will choose those antibiotics that you can take during breastfeeding. ②Diarrhea due to non-bacterial infection: For short time diarrhea, use montelukast to stop diarrhea and oral rehydration salts to replenish water and electrolytes; for long time diarrhea, take probiotics to regulate the balance of gastrointestinal flora. These are safe during lactation. When it comes to calcium supplementation during lactation, if the calcium deficiency is not serious, it is of course preferred to get it from food. For example, dairy products, soy products, dark green vegetables, fish and shrimp, these are the more familiar calcium food, there are also peanuts, purple cabbage is also a very good calcium food effect. Of course, when the diet can no longer meet your calcium needs, it is recommended to follow the doctor’s advice to take calcium supplements. Generally do not need to deliberately pursue the calcium content of calcium tablets, usually choose between 100 to 300 mg, two or three times a day, multiple doses can be. 4, breastfeeding nipple bites Every mother’s nipple has been bitten by the baby’s experience, and this time the care after the bite is very important. But the question arises, can you apply ointment? Can the baby still breastfeed after applying the cream? For general bites, I recommend sheep’s fat ointment, which is fine even if the baby eats it. If you don’t have goat fat ointment ready, you can apply chrysin ointment or mupirocin ointment immediately after breastfeeding, note that it is immediately, to pull away from the next breastfeeding time, so that the ointment stays on the nipple longer and wash it off before the next breastfeeding and don’t let the baby touch it (see Figure 3). 5. Mastitis during breastfeeding If a more serious bacterial infection of the breast is triggered by a baby biting through the nipple or blocking the milk, then antibiotics are needed to treat it. The antibiotics that are routinely used for the treatment of mastitis are usually penicillin or cephalosporins. These two types of drugs are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatricians and can be taken with confidence during breastfeeding. The effect on the baby is basically a reduction in the number of intestinal flora of the baby, but otherwise no effect. This requires mothers to carefully observe whether their babies have diarrhea: ① slight diarrhea: it means that the baby does not react to the drug, the mother can continue to take the drug; ② serious diarrhea: it means that the drug produces adverse nutrition for the baby, it is best to stop breast milk first, or consult the doctor to replace other kinds of antibiotics. 6, shingles during breastfeeding If shingles is the case, you need to take acyclovir, although this drug is safe to take during breastfeeding, but because shingles and chickenpox is caused by the same virus, it is likely to be transmitted to the baby, so do not have close contact with the baby, resulting in chickenpox. 7, lactation foot attack The active ingredient in the general treatment of foot odor ointment is miconazole nitrate, which basically does not enter the breast milk if applied topically. Topical topical application during lactation does not affect breast milk. 8, breastfeeding urticaria urticaria is one of the common skin allergic diseases, usually appear in the postpartum period, is due to postpartum weakness, low resistance, mood swings and other factors caused by. Because of the itching of the skin after the appearance of hives, extra attention should be paid to the care, do not alternate hot and cold, do not scratch, mothers try not to keep long nails, because if it is itchy at night, in their sleep will also unconsciously scratch, easy to scratch. In addition, do not apply hot compresses, keep a light diet, and need to go to the hospital to check allergens before treatment. ①For oral medication: the second generation anti-allergy drug loratadine or cetirizine is preferred abroad. Cetirizine is a drug that can be used symptomatically for babies over 6 months of age, so if lactating mothers are not taking loratadine, they can try cetirizine. For topical medication: If it is used to stop itching, a safe one to use during breastfeeding is glyburide lotion.
