Dullness in the eyes of preterm babies may be some kind of normal phenomenon, or it may be due to the small gestational age of preterm babies and their immature development. Dullness in the eyes may also be caused by certain diseases, such as cerebral palsy, congenital hypothyroidism, etc., which should be consulted in time to find out the cause of the disease. 1. Normal phenomenon: Due to the parents usually have less communication with the baby, lack of stimulation to interact with the parents, or the baby’s interest in certain things, the baby may appear to be dumbfounded and unblinking. It is usually an occasional episode, and if the baby’s spirit, sleep and diet are not abnormal, it may be a normal phenomenon. 2. Pathological factors: (1) Cerebral palsy: Premature birth, low birth weight and neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy are the main causes of cerebral palsy. Children with cerebral palsy may have visual impairment, mental retardation, motor and postural abnormalities, and abnormal reflex development, which may be manifested as dazed eyes and low muscle tone. (2) Congenital hypothyroidism: Congenital hypothyroidism can be caused by underdevelopment of the thyroid gland and impaired synthesis or secretion of thyroxine. Affected children mainly show psychoneurological reactions such as mental retardation, dementia, rigidity, lethargy and convulsions. After excluding physiological factors, preterm infants with symptoms of dementia in the eyes should consult a doctor in a timely manner, complete relevant examinations, identify the cause of the disease, and if necessary, be given targeted treatment by the doctor.
