How to Rehabilitate Your Knee After Surgery

Rehabilitation training after knee surgery is mainly related to the disease, the surgical method, the patient’s functional status and other factors. It can be divided into three stages of rehabilitation training: early, middle and late. 1. Early stage: knee flexion and extension training, ankle pump training, straight leg raising training, quadriceps and hamstring isometric contraction training can be carried out to prevent joint contracture, muscle atrophy, lower extremity deep vein thrombosis and other adverse complications. 2. Middle stage: stationary bicycle training, strength training such as sitting resistance knee extension training and prone resistance knee flexion training, small-scale squatting training against the wall, gradually restoring the weight-bearing standing training and walking training, lateral stride training, etc., in order to increase the range of motion of the knee joint and the strength of the muscles around the knee to improve the stability of the knee joint, and to promote the recovery of functional activities. 3. Late stage: On the basis of the middle stage training, further increase the intensity of muscle strength training by means of equipments, and at the same time, carry out weight-bearing deep squatting, up and down stairs training, jumping training, figure-of-eight running, and functional training such as running back and forth, in order to promote the patients to return to normal life activities. Rehabilitation training should be carried out under the guidance of a rehabilitation physician or therapist, and should not be done blindly to avoid injury.
