Endocrine disorders in children often do not attract parents’ attention in time because of their slow onset and inconspicuous early symptoms. Recently, the reporter interviewed Professor Bai Xinzhi from the First Hospital of Harbin Medical University and asked her to give a brief introduction to several common endocrine diseases. Professor Bai said that short stature refers to those whose height is below two standard deviations (2SD) or the third percentile of the average height of children of the same ethnicity, age and gender. Short stature can be caused by endocrine abnormalities, central nervous system diseases or chromosomal diseases. Precocious puberty is defined as the development of puberty before the age of 8 for girls and 9 for boys. Parents may notice early breast development and menstruation in girls, or early development of external genitalia or secondary sexual characteristics in boys. Both childhood endocrine disorders identify the causes in order to properly diagnose and treat them, so as not to close the epiphysis and lose the opportunity to grow taller. Obesity is a disease caused by long-term energy intake exceeding consumption, resulting in excessive accumulation of body fat. Most pediatric obesity is simple obesity, but there are also secondary obesity because of endocrine metabolic disease or tumor and other diseases. Professor Bai finally stressed that because pediatric obesity is often complicated by hypertension, hyperlipidemia, fatty liver and diabetes, and in serious cases, it can also affect heart and lung function and immune function, and is a risk factor for adult obesity, atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, so obese children should seek early medical consultation and reasonable treatment.
