Considerations for surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia

  Benign prostatic hyperplasia is an increase in the volume of tissues and organs due to an increase in the number of prostate parenchyma. It is a common disease in older men, and the pathological changes of hyperplasia usually begin to occur after the age of 40. symptoms associated with it appear after the age of 50 and can include progressive urinary difficulties (frequent and urgent urination), increased nocturia, weakness of the urinary line, intermittent urination or dribbling. If you experience any of these symptoms, please do not be nervous, but go to the hospital promptly, and your doctor will give you the appropriate treatment according to the characteristics of your disease. If you need surgery, please don’t worry. With the development of minimally invasive technology, the surgery will cause minimal trauma to you, and with your good cooperation, you will recover smoothly as soon as possible.  The following points are for your reference before and after the surgery.  Before surgery: If you have hypertension and heart and lung diseases, please stop smoking and drinking before surgery to prevent coughing after surgery. Eat more fresh vegetables and fruits to keep your bowels open and prevent constipation. If urinary retention is obvious and accompanied by renal insufficiency, you need to keep catheterization to improve renal function and control urinary tract infection. If you have difficulty in urination, you can have prostate massage and hot water bath to reduce prostate congestion. Please keep your mood relaxed and avoid tension.  After surgery: You may need continuous bladder flushing after surgery. Make sure the catheter is open and avoid twisting and folding. If you experience nausea, lower abdominal distension, palpitations or other discomfort after surgery, please tell your doctor and nurse in time to get prompt treatment. Fasting for six hours after the operation, gradually resume liquid, semi-liquid and general food, mainly warm and soft, easily digestible food. Make sure your bowels are clear to prevent bleeding from the prostate caused by excessive use of abdominal pressure. Please cooperate with the nurse to carry out activities and exercises. Generally, six hours after surgery, the nurse will help you to take a semi-recumbent position, gradually turn over in bed, sit up at the bedside and get out of bed. After removal of the urinary catheter, sometimes there will be transient incontinence symptoms, please do not worry, incontinence symptoms will gradually improve, please do more anal lifting exercises. Perineal exercise: 12-15 muscle contraction exercises for the buttocks, abdomen and perineum every hour for 2-3 days after surgery to restore the control of the urethral sphincter.  Discharge instruction: Avoid sitting for a long time or sitting in a long car and not sitting on a soft sofa for 3-6 months after surgery. Sexual intercourse is allowed only 6 months after surgery and no sitz bath. Drink more water in the early postoperative period, abstain from spicy and stimulating food to prevent constipation. Seek medical attention immediately if you find blood in urine or frequent, urgent, painful urination or painful scrotal swelling.
