What is the meaning of butterfly saddle enlargement

The enlargement of the pterygoid saddle is an imaging sign that shows a thinning of the pterygoid saddle bone or an enlargement of its diameter. It does not have any special significance, but mainly indicates the possibility of a tumor or cyst in the pituitary gland and other changes. However, sometimes the normal pituitary gland, if the secretion is relatively strong, may also compress the surrounding area and cause the tendency of the saddle to expand. Therefore, if the pituitary saddle is enlarged, we must further improve the corresponding examination, including pituitary hormone and enhanced MRI, enhanced CT, mainly to clarify whether the pituitary gland has certain lesions. If it is a pituitary tumor, the tumor should be removed. In the case of pituitary cysts, the specific case can be examined, and if it does cause significant clinical symptoms, the pituitary cyst can be surgically removed. In some cases, if there is no other specific problem, just a simple enlargement of the pterygoid saddle, no special treatment is needed for the time being, only a review is needed.
