What is brown vaginal discharge?

Vaginal brown discharge is a mixture of vaginal discharge and a small amount of blood. Normally, normal vaginal discharge is white or milky, but if there is inflammation, it can be different depending on the type of inflammation, such as bacterial vaginitis, fungal vaginitis and other infections. When brown vaginal discharge occurs, it may be due to stimulation by intercourse after the end of menstruation or before the onset of menstruation, and occasionally some small amount of bleeding during ovulation. Once brown vaginal discharge is present, it indicates a small amount of vaginal bleeding, so appropriate tests must be done to rule out any pathological lesions. Vaginal discharge includes routine laboratory tests, cervical cancer screening, ultrasound examination of uterine adnexa, and sex hormone test. According to the examination results, the first thing is to clarify the site of bleeding, which may originate from the vaginal wall with inflammatory congestion, injury bleeding, the cervix including cervical erosion bleeding, cervical polyp or cervical fibroid, submucosal fibroid prolapsing out of the cervix, etc. The main thing is to screen for cervical cancer to achieve early detection and early treatment. There are many causes of uterine bleeding, including abnormal intrauterine device or menstrual irregularities, and endometrial lesions can cause small amount of uterine bleeding.
