Edward’s syndrome, also known as trisomy 18, is a genetic disorder that is second only to Down’s syndrome in its breadth. It is caused by the presence of a third chromosome among chromosome 18 in the cells of the fetus or infant. Clinical manifestations include low weight, small and abnormally shaped head, small jaws, small mouth, low ears, forced contractions of the fists and overlapping fingers, and heart defects and other organ malformations and disabilities. Edward’s syndrome, can be definitively diagnosed during pregnancy through non-invasive DNA or amniocentesis tests.
